Stomach Definition

The stomach is a muscular organ which is present in our upper abdomen. If we were to present it on our bodies, it can be available on our left side just after the ribs. In basic terms, the stomach is a type of digestive sac. It is a continuation of the esophagus and consumes our churned food from it. Therefore, the stomach provides a kind of relationship between the esophagus and the small intestine, and is a defined pit which stops along the person's alimentary canal.

Stomach Antonomy

The stomach is a muscular organ situated on the left part of the topest abdomen. The stomach gets food from the esophagus. As food reaches the lastings of the esophagus, it inserts directly towards the stomach through a muscular valve known as the lower esophageal sphincter.

Function of Stomach

  • The main functioning of the stomach includes mechanical and chemical digestion of ingested food. 
  • Ingested food inserts towards the stomach from the esophagus like the cardiac orifice, passing into gastric juice produced by the stomach.
  • Repetitive muscle contractions physically churned the food particles and breaking food into smaller fragments which are combined with the gastric juice.
  • The numerous enzymes and hydrochloric acid ,pH 1-2 in the gastric juice helps in breaking food down even more, causing a semi-liquid substance known as chyme
  • This ultimately falls into the duodenum through the pyloric orifice by a procedure known as gastric peristalsis. 
  • Being a muscular organ, the stomach can distended quietly a lot and accumulate anywhere between two and three liters of food.
